First raced in 1909 with the intention of increasing sales of the newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giro continues to honour the pink paper used for printing with its famous leader's jersey – the maglia rosa.
As the first of the three Grand Tours every year, its position on the calendar means that the race is regularly impacted by unpredictable weather conditions. Treacherous for the riders but spectacular for the viewing tifosi as the peloton winds its way up and down a country brimming with cycling culture and passion.
